    With nearly two decades of experience defending criminal and serious traffic cases throughout Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia, Jay P. Mykytiuk has earned a strong reputation as a highly skilled and dependable trial attorney.

    Mr. Mykytiuk’s Background

    Mr. Mykytiuk began his legal career by “learning to swim in the deep end” at the Arlington County Public Defender’s Office, where he managed hundreds of serious criminal cases. He later transitioned into private practice at a major Washington, D.C. law firm before establishing himself as a solo practitioner. Prior to co-founding Monument Legal, he served for eight years as a Partner at the criminal defense firm Scrofano Law, PC. During that time, he handled felonies, misdemeanors, serious traffic offenses, and Civil Protection Orders in D.C. Superior Court as well as in Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax counties. He also appears frequently in federal court in Washington, D.C., and is a member of the Criminal Justice Act panel for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

    Commitment to Legal Excellence and Education

    Recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice as a criminal justice expert, Mr. Mykytiuk has served as a peer reviewer for the DOJ’s Wrongful Conviction Review grant program. Alongside his law partner, Christopher Mutimer, he teaches the Continuing Legal Education course, “How to Handle a Criminal Case in D.C. Superior Court,” each year. Known for supporting the next generation of attorneys, he frequently mentors young lawyers entering the field of criminal defense.
    In 2017, he further strengthened his DUI defense capabilities by completing the official Standardized Field Sobriety Testing certification course in Atlanta, Georgia.

    A proud resident of the DMV for more than 30 years, Mr. Mykytiuk enjoys spending his time outside the courtroom with his wife, two energetic sons, and their loyal dog.
